Spyropoulos Pushes for MWRD Disinfection of Cook County Waterways.
Declares Disinfection Critical to Protecting Cook County Resident's Health
CHICAGO –- Disinfection of waterways is a critical issue facing the Cook County Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) and Mariyana Spyropoulos, a candidate for its board, believes it is time to move towards further cleaning up the Chicago River.
"I am in this race to bring about positive change for the people of Cook County and believe disinfection of waterways within the MWRD jurisdiction is a must to protect our health and insure safe recreational use" Spyropoulos said. "The Federal Clean Water Act mandates that primary contact waterways be 'swim able and fishable'; standards that many Cook County waterways fail miserably at."
When elected, Spyropoulos will fight to address this issue and support legislation in Springfield that helps lead to disinfection.
One of eight MWRD candidates for three spots in the February 5th Democratic primary, Spyropoulos understands the importance of disinfecting the water flowing out of the MWRD's jurisdiction and knows it will improve the lives of the citizens of Cook County. "Without disinfection, free use of waterways by the citizens of Cook County is prohibited'" Spyropoulos said. "Some people say we can't afford it; but I believe we cannot afford not to." In response, Spyropoulos proposes a gradual phase in of disinfection procedures at MWRD facilities to spread the cost over time.
Spyropoulos, a former criminal prosecutor and a hearing officer for the Illinois Secretary of State's office, will use her position on the MWRD to push for the appropriate funding from Springfield for disinfection. Furthermore, Spyropoulos states that along with health concerns "this is an issue of protecting and improving our environment". "I intend to be the best possible steward of our environment when I take office."
As a member of the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters, Spyropoulos has shown a long-standing commitment to the environment and, just as she has as a member of Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century, will use her position on the Water Reclamation District to preserve the environment. Her candidacy has received the endorsement of the Illinois League of Conservation Voters, Personal PAC, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Congressman Danny Davis, Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Cook County Commissioner Robert Steele, Alderman Joe Moore, Alderman Manny Flores, Alderman Willie Cochran, State Senator Ricky Hendon, State Senator Kimberly Lightford, State Representative John Fritchey, 49th Ward Democratic Committee, United Hellenic Voters of Illinois and Democracy For America – North side.
