Sierra Club Endorses Mariyana Spyropoulos in Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Race
CHICAGO –- The Sierra Club of Illinois has endorsed Chicago attorney and Democratic Metropolitan Water Reclamation District candidate Mariyana Spyropoulos in the February 5th Democratic primary. As indicated by the Sierra Club, Spyropoulos stood out among eight candidates as someone who would be the best to protect the environment.
Spyropoulos has stumped on the campaign trail about many issues important to the Sierra Club, which she plans on addressing as commissioner. Some of her priorities include stopping irresponsible corporate dumping in Lake Michigan and finding a way to disinfect Cook County’s waterways (especially the Chicago River) to protect against health risks and provide for safe recreational use.
Spyropoulos has criticized the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District for not taking a stronger stance on environmental protection. During the campaign, she has pointed out that issues such as corporate dumping in Lake Michigan have been virtually ignored by the MWRD, which is unacceptable for a government agency responsible for the health and safety of over 5 million Cook County residents. Instead, she believes the MWRD should be an advocate for clean water and stand up against corporate pressure. The Sierra Club endorsement reinforces these sentiments and lends credibility to Spyropoulos’s argument that the MWRD needs to take a more proactive role in environmental protection.
As a member of the Sierra Club and the Illinois League of Conservation Voters, Spyropoulos has shown a commitment to the environment. Her candidacy is also endorsed by the Illinois League of Conservation Voters, Congresswomen Jan Schakowsky, Congressman Danny Davis, State Senators Kimberly Lightford, Donne Trotter, Mattie Hunter and Ricky Hendon, State Representatives John Fritchey, Luis Arroyo, Ken Dunkin, LaShawn Ford and Connie Howard, County Commissioners Larry Suffredin and Robert Steele, Aldermen Vi Daly, Joe Moore, Emma Mitts, Willie Cochran and Manny Flores, MWRD Commissioner Pat Horton, the pro-choice group Personal PAC, the Hellenic Voters League, Northside Democracy for America, 24th Ward Committeeman Larry Nelson and the 49th Ward Regular Democratic Organization.
