Tribune endorses Spyropoulos for MWRD
Mariyana Spyropoulos received the Chicago Tribune's endorsement adding to the already impressive list of backers for her candidacy to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District board in the February 5 Democratic primary.
The Tribune editorial touted Spyropoulos' environmental credentials along with her legal and business background in naming her its top pick among three endorsed candidates. According to the editorial, "She has smart proposals for educating citizens about water issues and nudging municipalities to adopt greener storm-water management ordinances."
"I am thrilled to have the endorsement of the Chicago Tribune," said Spyropoulos. "It shows that all of the hard work we have been doing is getting noticed. It also demonstrates more and more people recognize the importance of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District in protecting our environment."
The Trib's endorsement said, “Newcomer Mariyana Spyropoulos would bring to the board not only her legal background and MBA degree, but hands-on experience in conservation groups and as a restoration worker in county forest preserves. She has smart proposals for educating citizens about water issues and nudging municipalities to adopt greener storm-water management ordinances. She also wants to raise decision-making efficiency and cut staffing costs, by dropping the MWRD board to five members – ‘even if this means mine is one of the positions eliminated.'"
A member of the Sierra Club and League of Conservation Votes, Spyropoulos will use her "hands-on experience in conservation groups and as a restoration worker in county forest preserves" to bring strong environmental knowledge to the board according to the Tribune.
In addition to the Tribune’s endorsement, Spyropoulos is supported by the pro-choice group Personal Pac, the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters. Other backers include Congresswomen Jan Schakowsky, Congressman Danny Davis, State Senators Kimberly Lightford, Donne Trotter, Mattie Hunter and Ricky Hendon, State Representatives John Fritchey, Luis Arroyo, Ken Dunkin, LaShawn Ford and Connie Howard, County Commissioners Larry Suffredin and Robert Steele, Aldermen Vi Daly, Joe Moore, Emma Mitts, Willie Cochran and Manny Flores, MWRD Commissioner Pat Horton, the Hellenic Voters League, Northside Democracy for America, 24th Ward Committeeman Larry Nelson and the 49th Ward Regular Democratic Organization.
