Spyropoulos kickoff event raises over $30,000
Over 250 people attend first-time candidate’s kick-off fundraiser.
CHICAGO – As a testament to the immense support MWRD candidate Mariyana Spyropoulos is receiving throughout Cook County, the Chicago attorney's November 29th kickoff fundraiser brought in over $30,000. Taking place at Greek Islands Restaurant in Chicago, the event attracted well over 250 supporters and established Spyropoulos as a serious candidate in the MWRD race.
When asked about the event’s success, Spyropoulos said, "It is better to measure a candidate’s potential by the people who rally around them". Campaign spokesman Dan Shomon echoed these comments by saying, “the community responded to Mariyana’s candidacy with open arms and it is clear that this amount of support indicates people are looking for change." In a crowded field, candidates often get lost in the shuffle; however, Spyropoulos's event clearly showed that her name has registered with the voters.
Forty-ninth Ward Alderman Joe Moore has endorsed Spyropoulos because of her "independent and progressive views” and he was one of several elected officials attending.
Spyropoulos, who drew the top spot on the ballot, gathered and filed more than 25,000 signatures on her nominating petitions, well above the 5,327 valid signatures required.
As a candidate, she has come out in strong support of making environmental protection a top priority for the office and taking notorious polluters to task.
"I am an environmentalist and it's clear that government and private citizens must do more to protect the quality of drinking water for our children and future generations," Spyropoulos said. "Also, since there are no lawyers that are currently commissioners, I plan to help the MWRD follow environmental law and will work to craft storm water and drinking water regulations that are strict and safe.”
Spyropoulos has also identified promoting the use of green roofs, rain barrels and cisterns to conserve water, educate and promote public involvement in the conservation and protection of our water resources and the promotion of fiscal responsibility as items she would address in office.
Spyropoulos, who is in private legal practice and holds a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago, worked as a prosecutor in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office She was an assistant states attorney with the Cook County State's Attorney's office from 1997 to 2000. She also served as a hearing officer with the Illinois Office of the Secretary of State from 2000-2005.
