The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District treats wastewater for our 5 million residents. Its policies affect flooding, beaches, streams and rivers.
The MWRD plays an important role in the health of our community.
The District's geographical area of responsibility includes nearly all of Cook County. The MWRD is distinct in its ability to operate beyond its territory.
The MWRD has some other important distinctions...
- it operates the the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant which is the largest water treatment plant in the world
- the MWRD operates the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal
- it maintains the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan, the "Deep Tunnel Project", one of the largest civil engineering projects ever undertaken
